GRINDS: SD's Best Eats

Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop
Because getting body-slammed by carne asada is a God-given right.

Wax your chest and put on a sweaty vinyl mask, San Diego, you’re about to step into the ring and go nine guacamole-soaked rounds with the city’s best new taco spot. Opened in January of 2008, Lucha is the brainchild of the infamous Rojano brothers, three San Diego transplants hailing from Mexico City. “It’s a family affair” says big brother Jose “The last thing we wanted to do was open just another taco shop”. The end result was a killer eatery soaked in classic Mexican wrestling culture, with wall to wall murals and signed portraits of famous Luchadores.

But what about the food? Does it satisfy like a flying mule-kick from the Jalisco Strangler? You f***ing bet. “Most taco shops serve “pebble” meat” says Jose “It’s low grade marinated beef sold in plastic bags. That’s why we serve only premium sliced sirloin, cooked on a flame grill”. And if you want service, you can call and reserve the “Champion’s Booth”, the ultimate king of the ring experience. You need a 24 hour advance reservation, but the reward is a private waiter who serves you on gold plated plates and silverware. Viva el Campeon! (tacosmackdown.com)
